'Phoenix'
Bluegrass
Unlimited said:
"...Amy Gallatin has toured extensively from her Connecticut
base as a bandIeader and singer for many years. "Phoenix''
shows her and her group, Stillwaters to have carved out a nice
musical niche for themselves. With her core band of resonator
guitarist
Roger Williams and bassist John
Urbanik, and rounded out on this recording by Dave
and Bob Dick, mandolinist Ben
Pearce, and fiddler Mike Barnett,
Gallatin adds her
crystalline voice and fine ear for a song...".

Something
'Bout You,
recorded
in Nashville with ace producer Rich Adler of Soundwave Studios, is
Amy's first collaboration with resophonic guitarist Roger Williams.
Amy and Roger have been performing together in Stillwaters since
2000 and share a common love of good country harmony singing.
Roger's country music pedigree is impeccable; he is the son
of Northeastern country singer Gerry Lee and steel guitar player
Curly Williams. For this project, Amy and Roger culled from
hundreds of vintage duets, some of which Roger learned at his
mother's knee, everything from the Louvin Brothers to bluegrass
greats Jim and Jesse to the Everly Brothers, from obscure duos
like Merle Haggard and Bonnie Owens, Wilma Lee and Stoney Cooper,
Delia Bell and Bill Grant, and threw into the mix a few contemporary
tunes from the likes of Kevin Welch and New Hampshire songwriter
Rick Lang. Add some stellar session musicians providing some
classic pedal steel, fiddle, and honky-tonk piano, and the result
is 14 tunes of nostalgic country music!

"Damn,
if it isn't wonderful. I think it's the best thing that Amy has
done...one of the best albums I've heard this year. A bunch of
really old, relatively obscure country songs, and a few new ones,
done in that old-fashioned country duet style that is killer.
Amy's vocals...with the power and tone of her voice, are tempered
by Roger's baritone which has been sanded smooth by cigarettes
and, shall we say, maturity. The song selections are perfect,
the harmonies glorious, the sentiments wonderfully maudlin (like
any good old country song), and the Nashville session players
are amazing."

"Put
(it) in the hopper today, and it is now on its 3rd consecutive
spin. Lovely indeed. What singing! Great choice of material, and
just the right touch on the fiddles and ivorys and slidy slide
things."

"Something
'Bout You is more like what you'd hear if you slipped out the
back door of the Ryman Auditorium into Tootsie's Orchid Lounge,
or any of the other smoky joints along Nashville's Broadway....cleanly
and intelligently produced, and...a lot of fun to listen to."

'River
Of No Return'
(1996)
|
'River Of No Return'
is Roger's third solo project, a collaboration with long time musical
associate, Ray Legere.Here they combine
musical expertise with song selection/arrangement skills. Of the
twelve selections, eight are penned by the pair, three of which
are vocal arrangements. The music is again that of the bluegrass
and country genre. Ray is featured on mandolin, fiddle and rhythm
and lead guitar, as well as vocals. Roger handles the dobro and
vocals. Other musicians include: Frank Doody
on banjo, Brian Arsenault on bass,
Jean-Marc Doiron and Darren
Farrell on vocals. Bluegrass Now
magazine says "Ray Legere and Roger Williams go together
like peanut butter and jelly; they bring out the best in each other.
River of No Return is a testament to the power of friendship in
a musical setting. It is clearly evident on every track that these
two fellows love to get together and play music." In their
Highlight Review of the project, Bluegrass
Unlimited magazine says "It's a torrent of notes,
ideas, and moment after moment of enjoyment. You'll tap your foot,
lean forward toward your stereo speakers to catch each lively lick,
and shake your head in wonderment at how good these guys are....Williams,
like all great acoustic slide players, can be mellow and lingering
or crisp and jaunty."
Song selections include:

- 'Puddle
Jumper'
- 'Little
Man'
- 'Step, Stomp
And Stumble'
- 'Contemplation'
- 'This Lonesome
